Award-winning Saxophonist Moreira Chonguiça brings Afro World Jazz to Norval Foundation.

Award-winning Mozambican saxophonist Moreira Chonguiça, celebrated as one of Africa’s most innovative Jazz musicians, returns to Cape Town for a single performance on Africa Day, at 8:30pm on Saturday 25 May 2019 at Norval Foundation.

Moreira’s passionate stage performance takes places in Gallery 8 at Norval Foundation, where Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama’s installation “Labour of Many” - draping walls and floors with Hessian sacks - sets a dramatic backdrop.

Chonguiça is joined by Mozambican bassist, Helder Gonzaga, as well as his Cape Town-based band, comprising Kevin Gibson, Camillo Lombard, Ronan Skillen and Angelo Syster. Edna Jaime, a Mozambican dancer and choreographer performs  energetic dance moves in a unique interpretation of some of Moreira’s pieces.

This powerful initiative is supported by an Ant Mobility grant from Pro Helvetia Johannesburg, financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

Earlier in the day, Moreira will be conducting a workshop for Music Exchange (MEX), at Paul Bothner’s Plumstead branch. Tickets cost R50 and can be purchased from Quicket.

Africa Day is held on 25 May each year across the continent to mark the founding of the Organisation of African Unity – now known as the African Union – in 1963. It is a celebration of the diversity of and a call to unity for the continent.
