  • Reversing the Red to halt species extinction.

    South Africa has done much and has lots to be proud of. But way more still needs to be done. South Africa is one of only 17 megadiverse countries on earth, meaning it’s home to a large number of species and harbours a high number of endemic species, too. Yet a significant number of South African species face dire threats from a variety of sources putting their very survival at risk and jeopardising South Africa’s rich and priceless natural heritage. The was a key takeout of yesterday's South African satellite event of the Reverse the Red World Species Congress that saw speakers from a broad range of national conservation and biodiversity organisations, NPOS, public-sector and special interest groups come together to take stock of the status of species conservation in South Africa; work that’s being done to save species (some of which are on the very brink of extinction) and address species conservation challenges that remain unmet. The South African satellite event took place in the context of the White Paper on Conservation and Sustainable Use. This Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) document gives four goals for conservation in South Africa: sustainable use, access, benefit sharing and transformation. “These goals demand that we think creatively and do things differently,” said senior DFFE environmental consultant, Ms Mukondi Matshusa. “We need to reimagine conservation in South Africa to ensure that conservation efforts serve communities. For our most noble and urgent conservation work needs community support if it is to succeed.” In setting the scene at the commencement of the South African online event, threatened species programme manager at the SA National Biodiversity Institute, Ms Domitilla Raimondo said that South Africa has committed to a biodiversity convention to prevent species extinction. This commitment includes applying action for recovery and conserving species that are near to extinction; maintaining and restoring genetic diversity within populations and effectively managing interaction between people and wildlife to minimise conflict and maximise co-existence. “It amounts to a commitment to restore what we have lost, and conserve what we have,” Ms Raimondo told delegates. “South Africa has made great strides in species conservation. We have the expertise, the track record and the scientific and biodiversity proficiency to effectively halt rapid decline of species toward extinction. We have done well and, in many respects, set best practice standards that other regions and nations follow. However, much remains to be done." “South Africans cannot be complacent. Guarding against extinction is a time-consuming process that demands much. It demands collaboration and partnerships. It demands intimate understanding of the relationship between species and human beings so that interactions are respectful of people, their communities; and respectful of species and of biodiversity, too. South Africa is well equipped in these areas. However, we need to significantly scale up the national material investment in species conservation if we are to meet our biodiversity convention commitments.” South Africa has conducted red list assessments for 12 taxonomic groups. These assessments are aligned to International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List guidelines for regional assessment of species. Findings give a clear indication of just how threatened South Africa’s biodiversity is. Thirty five of our freshwater fish species are either endangered or critically endangered. This amounts to little under a third of fish species in South Africa’s fresh waters. To reverse this, Ms Raimondo said, South Africa must significantly scale up its investment. In the last five years R18.6 million has been invested in conserving freshwater fish species. It’s estimated that this investment must grow ninefold to effectively take each endangered or critically endangered species off of those lists. Similarly, she said, eleven amphibian species are in desperate need of protection. To give them that protection, investment assigned to conservation measures will need to be scaled up fourfold from R22.3 million invested since 2019 to an investment of R92.5 million over the next five years. It’s going to take about R965 million to save the 16 South African bird species in urgent need of recovery intervention; and more than R2 billion to ensure survival of the black rhino, wild dog and riverine rabbit. More than 100 plant species are in urgent need of recovery action. Work is underway right now to save only 14 percent of those (15 different plant species). The estimated average cost to save plant species is significantly more accessible than saving animal species: estimated at around zaR2.8 million per plant species over a five year period as opposed to an average of zaR13.2 per mammal species and zaR44.2 per bird species. South Africa, Ms Raimondo said, has people – professionals and citizen scientists alike – who work passionately to save species. Ours was the first country to quantify and catalogue which of its species required recovery intervention. South Africa was also the first country to systematically identify species that qualify for recovery in each of the taxonomic groups. There remains more to do. Bringing species back from the brink of extinction is possible. More than this, it’s extremely likely. However, success demands significant investment of time, money and an extensive committed, invested partnership network that includes conservationists, NGOs, public sector policy makers, the private sector and, critically, communities and persons who derive a living from natural resources. Reverse the Red is a global movement for strategic cooperation and action to ensure the survival of wild species and ecosystems and reverse the negative trend of biodiversity loss. The movement provides the tools and expertise to empower governments, partners, and local communities to set and reach biodiversity conservation targets and celebrates and amplifies successful achievements for species. The South African satellite conference of Reverse the Red took place remotely and was attended by delegates from SANBI, the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa, SA National Parks, the Endangered Wildlife Trust, Birdlife South Africa, the Botanical Society of South Africa, and the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation.     MSC Cruises today confirmed the order of two liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessels with French ship builder Chantiers de l’Atlantique. This sees the two World Class options confirmed as firm orders with an option for a fifth ship. The two new ordered vessels – currently referred to as World Class 3 and 4 - will be delivered in 2026 and 2027. MSC World Europa and MSC World America are already the most energy efficient ships in the industry performing significantly better than the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirement, and the new ships will be an evolution of the state-of-the-art World Class prototype with innovative solutions to maximise the energy efficiency, with extensive use of heat recovery and other technological solutions, which will see the vessels having an even further reduced carbon footprint. In addition, the new ships will be ready for a variety of alternative fuels including bio and synthetic methane and green methanol.  The ships will also be fitted with the next generation dual fuel internal combustion engines with reduced methane slip. Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman, MSC Cruises, said, “We are proud to continue our 20-year partnership with the Chantiers de l’Atlantique, with whom we have already built 18 ships with our 19th under construction. The World Class is a truly innovative prototype and together we are building some of the most advanced ships in the world. We are committed to researching and investing in future environmental technologies as they become available, to ensure we continue progressing on our decarbonisation journey to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.” Laurent Castaing, General Manager, Chantiers de l’Atlantique added, “At a difficult time for the European shipbuilding industry, MSC Cruises has shown its confidence in our abilities and skills with this order. We would therefore like to express our gratitude to MSC Cruises for its renewed confidence at this crucial time. In addition, MSC Cruises, always seeking to reduce the environmental impact of its ships quickly and significantly, has accepted a significant cost premium to improve the energy efficiency of these new ships which, according to the IMO's EEDI index, will emit 50% less CO2 than the IMO's 2008 benchmark.” Castaing continued, “We would also like to thank our government, whose support for our R&D policy to make our ships greener has enabled us to meet the customer's expectations for this order.” The new World Class vessels will feature shore power plug-in connectivity to reduce carbon emissions in port, the most advanced wastewater treatment systems designed in line with the IMO, new advances in waste management, and a comprehensive range of onboard energy efficient equipment to optimise engine use and hotel energy needs to further reduce emissions. The two new orders will be subject to access to financing, as per industry practice.

  • NEXT24 showcases 24 South African brands ready to take on the world.

    An exciting curated selection of craft and design brands from all corners of South Africa, chosen for their potential to enter the international market, will be on display as part of NEXT24, at Decorex Cape Town from 6-9 June 2024 at the CTICC. The annual NEXT trade exhibition, which was launched in 2018, is proudly presented by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI), a South African non-profit with more than two decades of success in developing creative people, small businesses, and the craft and design sector at large throughout the country. The seventh iteration of NEXT will see 24 exhibitors showcasing their wares and is coordinated by the CDI’s Fran Stewart. The exhibition is aimed primarily at buyers who are sourcing for the global market but also accommodates interested local retailers. NEXT24 will introduce 12 new participants and will welcome back 12 former exhibitors. First- timers include former Design Indaba Emerging Creatives Leila Atelier and Ananta Design Studio, upcyclers Plasticity, uniquely African jewellery brands Ditakki and Zulu Mien, and Karoo Baba’s Merino sheepskin products. Overall, this year’s cohort places a strong focus on ethical design that ranges from the sourcing of materials to the crafting processes themselves, and prioritises quality over quantity as brand integrity is established in the international market. ‘We’ve seen some stand-out work in our product sessions – fresh, contemporary and exciting – and we can’t wait for the public and buyers to get a glimpse of them at Decorex,’ said Stewart. All NEXT24 exhibitors are coached through the CDI’s export development programme, which has supported more than 70 businesses since inception. This programme has been running for several years and was initiated and run with the support of the Dutch Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI). NEXT has seen its past participants go on to further success. Dubbed ‘Vibrant Harmony’, this installation aims to bring together the dynamic world of interior design and the latest colour trends. Mezzanine Interiors was founded in 1999 by interior designer Lee-Ann Bell. The interior design studio and furniture brand based in Johannesburg has an impressive portfolio spanning multiple corporate clients, and residential projects across South Africa and Dubai. Stand-out retail projects include the popular Johannesburg neighbourhood café Croft & Co. Hocus Interior Design Studio, based in Green Point, Cape Town, is another longstanding studio set to demonstrate colour artistry. Established by Marcelle Crowther in 1995, Hocus Interior Design Studio is a stalwart Decorex exhibitor previously named by Anne Roselt, a former Colour Manager at Plascon, as the stand with the most inspiring use of colour. Lastly, Ohkre Collective is a design-led architecture and interior design studio founded by architects Phillip Nel and Heinrich van Zyl. With an impressive team of architects and interior designers, Ohkre has earned a reputation for creating spaces and places that inspire and captivate, such as The Sensorium Spa at Future Found Sanctuary, and is known for numerous beachside residential homes. To create the installation pods, each studio will choose a curated selection of colours from the four colour palettes of Plascon’s 2024 Colour Forecast: The Dive In Colour Palette, Origin Colour Palette, Eternal Colour Palette and Succulent Colour Palette. Dive In’s aquatic allure is captured in nature-inspired blue hues including the vivid Caribbean Sea (G7-A1-2) and North Beach (B4-B1-1), and more gentle Aqua Pura (G7-C2-2) and Innuendo (B3-B1-3); while the Origin Colour Palette blends classic monochromes – Ewa (72) and Light Reflection (Y6-A2-3) – with natural warmth like Rich Spanish Gold (Y1-C1-1), Ginger Biscuit (O1-C1-1) and Turkish Tart (Y2-B1-3).
