Announcing the 8th South African leg of the Fashion Without Borders Africa season, Kabisoso says despite the years of disruption, due to Covid-19, the fashion industry is beginning to find its feet again.
“It was during this pandemic that we saw technology and social media being used on a massive scale to keep people safe, productive, and connected while being physically apart,” he highlights. “Young and upcoming fashion designers must then continue taking advantage of this digital transformation, to initiate a series of initiatives to improve their speed to market and to implement sustainable innovation in their core product design, manufacturing, and supply chain processes.”
With the intentioned aimed at reaching the Fashion Designers in African regions, with underdeveloped fashion scenes to give them access to the wider market in the African continent, this year’s Fashion Without Borders Africa will be a blend of new talent, emerging and established names, with a talent list that comprises Refilwe Elliot (BW), Rachel Olombe (DRC), Siphokazi Mzekandaba (SA), Saint | Lazerus (BW), Bantu Gold (ZM), Eva Kirsten (SA), Kaelo Godirwang (BW), Kagiso Lesotlho (BW), Thoko Kunene (SA), Nivaldo Thierry (Mozambique), Tumie Mohoasa-ngüo (BW), Lebrun Bangala (DRC), Carol Lubelo (Eswatini), Sibu Sithole (SA), Abby LaDiva John (BW), Bontle Modise (SA), Robert Mathapo (BW), Althea Andrews (SA), Sarah Mubenesha (DRC), and Seabe Abby John (BW).
Kabisoso adds that what inspired the idea of Fashion Without Borders Africa was the fact that in different spheres, across the continent, fashion had become more of the entertainment aspect rather than becoming a business. That is what Fashion Without Borders Africa intends to change and can only do this through partnerships, and conversations that will build solid foundations for sustainability in the long run.
By forming partnerships on projects, businesses in the fashion and textile industries can reach their full potential, save money, and create something innovative. Because of this, this year Fashion Without Borders Africa has collaborated with Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, BLM Naturals, LeAfrika, Perfect Choice SA and Roimanitou. Such partnerships are what contribute towards the multi-billion-dollar industry; by creating jobs for designers, models, beauticians, make-up artists, producers, textile designers, manufacturers, event organisers, and more.
Fashion Without Borders Africa is more than just a fashion show, but also a lifestyle event that includes pop-up stalls, industry-related workshops, and opportunities that will allow people to interact with both local and SADC region designers.
