Free recycling initiative by adidas for Cape Town Marathon.

Global sports brand adidas is calling on residents living in suburbs along the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon route to register this week for two months of free kerbside recycling collections taking place from mid-October to mid-December 2022.

Eligible suburbs include Woodstock, Observatory, Rondebosch, Newlands, Claremont, Rosebank, Mowbray, Salt River and District Six. Suburbs that already have a City of Cape Town recycling initiative in place, have not been included in the pilot phase to avoid duplicating efforts, which ultimately allows for more residents across the City to benefit from a kerbside recycling collection service.

Commenting on behalf of adidas, Senior Brand Director, Kate Woods said, “As proud technical sponsor of the Cape Town Marathon, adidas is committed to ending plastic waste. We’re thrilled that water sachets will no longer be handed out at the events and wanted to take that a step further by promoting a sustainable mindset beyond just race day, by offering residents who live along the route, a free recycling collection. We want to show how easy it is to recycle, and at the end of the two month period, we’ll share stats that highlight how much waste was diverted from landfills and kept in a circular economy to potentially be used again. It’s our hope that these results will encourage residents to continue with their recycling efforts in the long-term.“

The adidas recycling initiative will be serviced by Clearer Conscience, a Cape Town-based waste service provider. Residents who live in the suburbs listed above can sign up for the free kerbside collection of their recycling, by visiting https://clearer.co.za/adidas from Monday 3 October 2022. Once eligible residents have signed up for the service, Clearer Conscience will distribute recycling bags to the households that have registered, in time for the first collection, which will take place during the week of 10 October. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg said the City commends adidas for the role they will play in raising awareness about the need for recycling. “It is extremely heartening to see global brands such as adidas realising that we need a whole-of-society approach to reduce the burden of waste on the environment, and demonstrating their commitment to minimise waste so clearly. The City appreciates collaborative efforts to address the ever-increasing volume of waste produced in our modern highly industrialised economies, and I am excited to see the concept of extended producer responsibility taking root. The City will be using data gathered from this process in the design of a municipal recycling collection programme for the area in coming years.”
