Steenberg toasts Cap Classique Day on 1 September.

Join Steenberg in celebrating the magnificence of South African sparkling wine on Cap Classique Day, Thursday, 1 September 2022.

Together with fellow Cap Classique producers, Steenberg Vineyards are honouring this annual showcase of diversity and splendour on the first day of spring with captivating Cap Classique experiences and a brand new vintage of their ultra-elegant prestige cuvée, Lady R.

All guests and visitors to Steenberg on Cap Classique Day will be welcomed with a complimentary glass of bubbly at the tasting room, restaurants and Hotel & Spa. Joining in the Cap Classique celebration, Bistro Sixteen82 will be offering guests Tapas & Bubbly for Two for the entire month of September. Enjoy Chef Kerry Kilpin’s signature tapas with a bottle of Steenberg 1682 Chardonnay Cap Classique at just R685 for two people.

The new 2017 vintage of Steenberg Lady R, the farm’s flagship Cap Classique, is a consummate blend of Pinot Noir (70%) and Chardonnay (30%). Seriously structured, yet elegantly nuanced and vibrant, Lady R resonates the courageous life of Catharina Ras, Steenberg’s inspiring 17th century founder. Her legacy is ever-present in the passion and determination of the entire Steenberg cellar team who created this statuesque Cap Classique masterpiece. The opulent Steenberg Lady R 2017 spent an astounding 52 months on the yeast lees in the bottle developing its luxurious character, creamy mousse and complexity.

“Our Lady R is a representation of the stunning natural acidity and ageability of the 2017 harvest season, in combination with careful maturation on the lees adding texture and mouthfeel, all in beautiful harmony,” says Cellarmaster Elunda Basson, one of the country’s most accomplished masters of Cap Classique.

Specially crafted to be enjoyed for all occasions yet equally elegant, the ever-popular non-vintage Steenberg 1682 Chardonnay Cap Classique is a richly layered B Blanc de Blancs that matures for up to 18 months on the lees to reach its full potential. The result is a fresh and vibrant Cap Classique with a lively palate and zesty acidity.

“Our Brut Chardonnay Cap Classique exudes freshness and fruit purity with great finesse and complexity. It’s the perfect way to celebrate spring,” says Cellarmaster Elunda Basson.

Perfected by time, it takes a minimum of twelve months for the base wine to be transformed into a fine Cap Classique. The magic happens during fermentation in the bottle where the vivacious bubbles evolve into an elegant, fine mousse, allowing the Cap Classique to develop its signature yeasty character. Visitors to the Steenberg Tasting Room will be able to watch the masterly process of hand riddling individual bottles by the skilful and impassioned Steenberg team each morning and afternoon.

Steenberg Lady R 2017 is available at the cellar door price of R540, while the Steenberg 1682 Chardonnay Cap Classique sells at R200. For online purchases visit https://www.steenbergfarm.com/buy-wine-online/.
