The sweetest slumber.

Twitching. Snuffling. Shuffling. A quiet bark. Have you ever wondered what's going on inside your dog's head as they snooze peacefully on their comfy bed?

Hells Pet Nutrition

If you've observed your dog twitching, wagging their tail, or even making adorable little noises while asleep, you've likely caught a glimpse into the world of dog dreams. But how do you go about finding the perfect spot and perfect bed that they will love to snuggle into and dream? Marycke Ackhurst, pet behaviour expert from Hill’s Pet Nutrition says that just as humans are fussy about where they sleep, so are our dogs.

Selecting the right dog bed is important, adds Ackhurst, as when your dog sleeps on a comfortable and supportive bed, they are more likely to enjoy deeper and more restorative sleep cycles.

She provides the below tips when it comes to choosing the right bed to enhance your dog's sleep quality:

Comfortable support – The right dog bed should provide adequate support for your pet's joints and muscles. Memory foam or orthopaedic beds are excellent options, especially for older dogs or those with joint issues. Remember to change up your dog’s bed according to their size or ability to climb on surfaces. As dogs get older very soft beds may be more difficult for them to navigate.

Size matters – Dogs come in various shapes and sizes, and their beds should too. Ensure that the bed is appropriately sized for your dog so they can stretch out, curl up, or flop down comfortably.

Cosy materials – Soft, cosy, and hypoallergenic materials are key to creating a dream-worthy bed. Your dog's bed should be inviting, making it a haven for a restful night's sleep.

Durability – Dogs can be playful even in their sleep, so choose a bed made of durable materials that can withstand their occasional midnight antics. Some dogs like nesting before they lie down so choose a bed made of durable materials that can withstand the scratching and pawing while your dog settles in their spot.

Temperature regulation – Dogs can get too hot or too cold, affecting the comfort of their sleep. Consider beds with temperature-regulating features to keep your dog comfortable and content while sleeping, and napping, during the day. Your dog may prefer different surfaces or materials to sleep on, depending on the season.

Ackhurst adds that adequate support from a quality dog bed can also alleviate any discomfort or pain your dog may experience during sleep. This means fewer interruptions, allowing your dog to sink into a peaceful and uninterrupted relaxed state.
