- Pet Obesity Month: A call to action for healthier, happier pets.
It’s Pet Obesity Month, making it the perfect time to reassess your pet’s health and nutrition. Dr Karien Brink, Veterinarian at Hill’s Pet Nutrition , says that pet obesity is the number one health risk for pets. She notes that 90% of pet parents are unaware that their pets are overweight and with more than 50% of pets affected, this is a significant risk to their health and well-being. How can you tell if your pet is overweight? Dr Brink suggests asking yourselves these three questions: Does your pet struggle to catch their breath when going for a walk or climbing the stairs? Have they become noticeably less active and eager to play? Are they looking a little bit rounder – their ribs are difficult to feel, they have a broader back, a severe abdominal bulge, and/or fat deposits around their neck and tail? “We know pets who are overweight are less happy, live shorter lives, and are at a higher risk of developing arthritis, urinary conditions, skin problems, heart disease, and cancer,” says Dr Brink. “Your pet does not have to be obese to be at risk of these health concerns. Carrying just an extra kilogram or two can affect your pet.” If you think your pet may be overweight, Dr Brink recommends visiting your vet for an assessment. Your vet can recommend the best plan if your pet needs to shed a few kilos. Dr Brink shares the below tips for pet parents who are embarking on their pet’s weight management journey: Keep a check on treats – extra treats and human food can quickly produce additional calories and kilos. If you want to treat your pet, think of alternatives rather than food, such as a new toy, extra playtime, snuggles, and games. Get active - play a game of catch with your dog in the park or garden, to keep your dog moving. They will also love quality time. Take a walk – a stroll around the neighbourhood or park is a great way to keep your dog moving and, if you can, include some obstacles and different terrains, to challenge your dog a little more. Engage with your cat - boxes, pet tunnels, and a crumpled piece of paper are activities that will provide fun and exercise for your cat. Discuss diet with your vet – Whether your pet needs to lose weight or maintain a healthy one, ask your vet for the best-suited food options. Studies have shown that 88% of pets lost weight in just two months, with a reduction in body fat of up to 28% when being fed Hill's Prescription Diet Metabolic or Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic + Mobility. Follow the feeding guidelines on the pack – to prevent overfeeding, weigh your pet ’ s food , place it in the Hill’s feeding cup, and cut the cup to the correct level. Alternatively, use a weight measuring cup. This helps to ensure that whoever is fee ding your pet is giving the right amount of food each time. Dr Brink says, “Calorie counting and reducing portion sizes is not sustainable and inevitably your pet will put on weight they have lost. Instead, pet parents should feed a food that encourages fat burning instead of fat storing, helping pets lose weight effectively and keep it off.” Pet Obesity Month serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining our pet’s weight. Dr Brink concludes, “By making informed choices about nutrition and exercise, our pets can live a longer and healthier life – enjoying it to the fullest.” For more information visit the Hill’s website
- Nestlé KitKat encourages Mzansi about the importance of fun breaks with new campaign.
In today’s fast-paced world, the demands of daily life can feel relentless. For many, the notion of taking a break has shifted to simply grabbing a coffee or scrolling through social media, but there’s always a better way to recharge—through fun! The latest Nestlé KitKat campaign aptly titled "For Fun’s Sakes," reminds us that fun isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity. By taking intentional, playful breaks, we can recharge, destress, and enhance our well-being. “Laughter isn’t just contagious—it can also be viewed as being very therapeutic. Laughter can reduce stress, increase endorphins, and strengthen social connections, making it a powerful tool for maintaining a healthy mind and soul. A good laugh can often leave people feeling refreshed and uplifted with a positive perspective” mentions Kina Kimberly Mkhize, Senior Brand Manager for Nestlé KitKat in the East & Southern Africa region (ESAR). Incorporating laughter and enjoyment into our daily lives can also improve cognitive function. A recent study by Harvard Business Review (HBR) indicates that short, intentional breaks for relaxation and laughter improve productivity by up to 34%. So, instead of feeling guilty for pausing, embrace it! KitKat’s “For Fun’s Sakes” campaign serves as a gentle reminder that a few minutes spent watching something light-hearted or silly can be as valuable as hours of focused work. “The core message for the Nestlé KitKat “For Fun’s Sakes” campaign is to take a break for fun’s sake, encouraging people to pause, laugh, and recharge. As a brand we understand that a well-timed break can do more than satisfy a craving; it can replenish our minds and uplift our spirits. Through this campaign we want to remind people that breaks improve focus and prevent burnout, particularly when those breaks include elements of play or creativity” adds Kina. Here's what to expect from the campaign which will be rolling out in October 2024, which coincides with International Mental Health Month: The upcoming For Fun’s Sakes News Show offers an easy way to introduce some levity into your day. With two-minute segments that can be viewed on TikTok and Instagram, the brand aims to share uplifting stories and poke fun at serious news. The show is set to provide viewers with the perfect excuse to take a pause and recharge. By focusing on content that makes you smile, KitKat aligns with research showing that a bit of fun can keep us more engaged, relaxed, and motivated. To make it even more enticing, KitKat is giving South Africans the chance to win their share of R500 000 in fun break experiences. Winners will be able to select the fun break of their choosing. KitKat invites South Africans to share their favourite ways to take a break, whether it’s a quick game, a dance session, or a moment of laughter. After all, these mini-breaks do more than just add a little joy; they help us recharge, reduce stress, and refocus our energy. KitKat’s For Fun’s Sakes campaign also emphasizes the value of “Mindful Enjoyment,” a sustainability approach from the parent brand. The concept of mindful enjoyment focuses on savouring moments without overindulgence. In today’s multitasking world, it’s easy to eat or relax mindlessly, which can reduce the restorative effects of our breaks. By promoting portion control and encouraging people to be present while enjoying their breaks, KitKat reinforces the idea that enjoying small, purposeful pauses can be both refreshing and sustainable. The benefits of laughter, relaxation, and mindful enjoyment are powerful. KitKat’s For Fun’s Sakes campaign reminds us that taking a break is about more than just pressing pause on our to-do lists; it’s about pressing play on life.

- Remembering Tigers, By Remembering Wildlife.
This hardcover coffee table book, the ninth in the series, is a collection of 88 stunning colour images donated by many of the world’s top wildlife photographers – including Art Wolfe, Jonathan & Angela Scott, Greg du Toit and Sergey Gorshkov – to help protect tigers in the wild. This year’s cover image was taken by Sarah Skinner. The book aims to raise awareness of the plight facing tigers and to raise money to protect them, with all profits from book sales going to conservation. There are only around 5,500 tigers left in the wild and they are now restricted to just 10% of their historical range. Sales from Remembering Tigers will be used to fund conservation projects in areas where they are vulnerable. Weighing up to 260kg and measuring up to 3 metres in length, the tiger is the largest of the big cats. It is found in Asia, from India – where two-thirds of all wild tigers live – through to the Russian Far East and into China. Its habitat ranges from sub-tropical forests to snow-covered mountainous terrain. Numbers are increasing in some areas, thanks to conservation efforts, yet the tiger is the least numerous of all the large wild cats and is listed as ‘endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Founder and producer of Remembering Wildlife Margot Raggett MBE said: “It’s an oft-quoted fact that there are more tigers in captivity in the US than there are left in the world, a stark reminder of how the future of tigers might end if conservationists do not continue their focus and their fight. Tigers are a bellwether for the health of an ecosystem. For every tiger protected in the forest, there are plants, trees, insects, birds and other mammals who thrive.” The afterword is by Amit Sankhala, trustee of the Tiger Trust, who said: “Seeing a tiger in its natural habitat is a mesmerising encounter and I am thankful for Margot Raggett’s book which not only shows the beauty of the tiger but will also inspire the next generation of conservationists.” More than 280 wildlife photographers have contributed to the Remembering Wildlife series since it started in 2016, working under the banner Wildlife Photographers United. It has now raised over £1.15m GBP/$1.5m USD/R26m ZAR, for 74 conservation projects in 33 countries. About the Author The series of books was created by wildlife photographer Margot Raggett MBE after she saw a poached elephant in Kenya and set out to make the most beautiful book on a species ever seen. She persuaded the world’s best wildlife photographers to donate an image and Remembering Elephants came out in 2016. At the time, Margot Raggett MBE thought the book would be a one-off. But her vision created a series, with Remembering Elephants followed by Remembering Rhinos, Remembering Great Apes, Remembering Lions, Remembering Cheetahs, Remembering African Wild Dogs, Remembering Bears, Remembering Leopards – and soon-to-launch ninth book in the collection, Remembering Tigers. Margot Raggett was awarded the MBE in the King’s Birthday 2023 Honours List for services to international wildlife conservation. - TUMI SEKHUKHUNE: READY TO RISE AGAIN AT THE ICC WOMEN’S T20 WORLD CUP 2024
As the Proteas Women gear up for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Tumi Sekhukhune finds herself at a defining moment in her career. After battling through injuries and missing the 2023 home World Cup, the seasoned seam bowler is ready to prove her worth and represent her community of Daveyton, Johannesburg, with pride. Overcoming Setbacks For Sekhukhune, missing last year’s T20 World Cup was a significant setback. "It wasn';t a nice experience for me, especially because it was at home. Playing on a global stage in front of my family would have been very special,” she shares. However, this disappointment spurred her to work even harder. "I had to sharpen my skills and reflect on what I could offer to the team" ; she says. The aftermath of her recurring groin injury in 2022 and her exclusion from the World Cup squad led to both mental and physical challenges. "I had a mental breakdown. Sometimes you feel like you're not enough, or that your skills aren’t enough." Motivated by her teammates and provincial coaches, including former DP World Lions coach and new Proteas Women fielding lead Bongani ‘Coach Fantastic’ Ndaba, Sekhukhune found a way forward. "I had coaches who helped me improve in specific areas, and taking small steps helped me stay motivated" she adds. Despite the challenges of regaining fitness, she maintained her focus. "Some days, I didn’t feel like doing anything, but I told myself to take it one day at a time." Pride in Representing Daveyton Daveyton, her hometown, has always played a significant role in Sekhukhune’s journey. "Growing up in Daveyton shaped the person I am today" ; she reflects. A multi-talented athlete who participated in handball, volleyball, and netball in her youth, Sekhukhune’s transition to cricket allowed her to showcase her skills on an international stage when she made her debut in September 2018. Representing her community in the World Cup fills her with pride. "It's special to see people from Daveyton supporting me, posting messages on social media, and knowing they're 100% behind me. That connection really means a lot to me." Preparing for the World Cup Securing her spot in the 2024 T20 World Cup squad is a milestone for Sekhukhune. "One of my main goals was to get selected for the World Cup. Now that I have, my focus is on staying consistent, ensuring I’m prepared, and being ready to seize opportunities when they come." Sekhukhune has also tailored her training to adapt to the challenging conditions in the UAE. "I spent more time in the sun, trying to get used to the conditions. Our tour of Pakistan before heading to the UAE helped me adjust to the heat." ; As a senior player, she knows her role goes beyond just bowling. "It’s important for me to contribute as much off the field as on it. My bowling style suits these conditions, and with the team’s success last year, there’s pressure, but I’m ready for it." Personal Growth and Reflection The past few years have provided Sekhukhune with opportunities for personal growth. "I had to unlearn certain habits and adopt new ones. It wasn’t easy, but it helped me improve both as a cricketer and as a person. " Her time away from the game allowed her to reconnect with family and friends. "I spent more time with family, friends, and my dog, which helped me stay grounded." She also pursued her studies during recovery. "My injury gave me time to focus on finishing my degree in Supply Chain Management in Logistics, and my family motivated me to continue my education." Advice to Future Proteas Sekhukhune has learned the value of patience and discipline in overcoming setbacks. "Sports come with challenges and injuries, but it’s important to stay grounded. Do your gym work, train hard, and fuel your body with the right nutrients. When setbacks come, be disciplined and trust the process." For young girls dreaming of playing for the Proteas, her message is clear: "Cricket is a rewarding game, filled with ups and downs. Keep working on your craft, stay patient, and even if you fall down, you’ll rise again. Believe in yourself, and know that you are going places." Ready to Shine Again Sekhukhune’s journey back to fitness and form is a testament to her strength and determination. As she prepares for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, she stands as a proud representative of her community, ready to make her mark once again. With the support of Daveyton and the lessons she’s learned along the way, Tumi Sekhukhune is poised to rise, carrying the heart of South Africa with her on the global stage. - SUN CARE FOR PRE, DURING AND POST SUN EXPOSURE
With the days getting warmer as we prepare to welcome the sunny season in South Africa, a lot of you have many days planned that involve being outside and moreover exposed to UV rays. While armouring up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen before heading outside is essential, how you take care of your skin post-sun exposure is just as important. This month to commemorate the launch of their UV Derm Post UV Exposure Repair Body Lotion – SKIN functional, a leading South African skincare brand, wants to emphasise not only the importance of protecting your skin while you are in the sun but also the post-care and repair for the skin after it has been exposed to the sun. Kevin Khosa, Customer Service Manager at SKIN functional said: "UV exposure causes damage to the skin, so it's important to do whatever you can to repair that damage. More immediate damage would show up as a sunburn, but longer term, it would show up as dark spots, decreased skin laxity, or skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to not only apply your skin sunscreen once a day. It needs to be reapplied throughout the day to ensure your skin is always sufficiently protected. The SKIN functional newly launched Sunscreen Stick is the perfect on-the-go sunscreen that you can carry with you and is easy to apply." So, what is sun damage? Sun damage is not just a sunburn, but more when the sun prematurely ages the skin, this is called photoageing, and this can lead to skin cancer. Sunburn also causes DNA damage. Dermatologists refer to the damage the sun does to skin by several names, including photoageing, photodamage, solar damage, or sun damage. It can take as little as five minutes for fair-skinned people to start taking on the harmful effects of the sun. Additionally, UV rays affect your skin for hours even after you're out of the sun. You will know that your skin has sun damage when you see spots, blotches, and wrinkles that show up over time. A suntan is also a side effect of sun damage. The sun's beams bring out a chemical in your body associated with melanin, which darkens your skin, part of an effort to protect it. Other kinds of damage aren't as easy to spot. If you are looking to correct the skin from this damage you may want to consider incorporating a Retinaldehyde Serum into your routine. This active ingredient works to improve skin’s surface as it treats signs of sun damage, uneven texture, wrinkles, and surface imperfections. Retinaldehyde is a Vitamin A derivative and the precursor to Retinoid acid. Effective for ageing, acne and dark spot concerns, Retinaldehyde inhibits collagen breakdown, reduces dermal elastosis, and significantly improves photo aged skin. It also unclogs blocked pores, improving black heads and breakouts. Promotes cell turnover, encouraging new cell growth for a more even complexion. Try the NEW SKIN functional 0.2% Retinaldehyde that is available from today. Post Exposure Repair Your post exposure repair is as important as your sun exposure care. After you have been in the sun, reaching for a good lotion or moisturiser with skin-loving ingredients can help replenish and protect the skin barrier. Khosa recommends using a product with: - Vegan Lanolin which is a deeply hydrating ingredient; - Anhydroxylitol known to deeply hydrate the skin and retain moisture; - Centella Asiatica to soothe inflammation in the skin and; - Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract to further soothe inflammation in the skin. “A lotion or moisturiser with these effective ingredients will not only help your skin feel better but it will help heal the skin barrier and get your skin to good health again,” added Khosa. Sun damage is a very real risk for your skin and with global warming and the earth’s atmosphere depleting, the sun's rays are getting stronger and more damaging. To holistically protect your skin, your sun care routine should be all encompassing and incorporate pre-sun care, during as well as post exposure repair. The most ideal scenario is to limit sun exposure as far as possible and wear protective clothing when venturing outdoors. Today, the brand new UV Derm Post UV Exposure Repair Body Lotion launches and it's everything your skin needs post sun exposure.
