  • PROTEAS WOMEN'S TOUR DIARY: SUNÉ LUUS REFLECTS ON ODI TRI-SERIES IN SRI LANKA

After a couple of months away from the international stage, the Proteas Women travelled to Sri Lanka to compete in the One-Day International (ODI) Tri-Series against the host nation and India. Upon arrival, we were met with the intense heat and humidity of the subcontinent, making Durban's weather feel like a breeze.   Image supplied Following our first team meeting, Coach Mandla (Mashimbyi) and the support staff gave the team clear direction on what was expected throughout the tour, both on and off the field. This set the tone for the next three weeks, with the theme being “control the controllables.” With Mandla’s guidance, this theme applied not only to the sport we love so much but also to our attitude and the way we approach challenges and tasks at hand.   Under captain Laura Wolvaardt, we also reflected on the team’s values and how we could incorporate them into our daily lives throughout the tour, helping us grow both as individuals and as teammates.   In the blazing heat, the weather quickly became a popular talking point, especially given that we would be playing two subcontinental teams in their backyard, where conditions are known to be low, slow, and offer turn. Despite the host nation having the upper hand in understanding and adapting more quickly to the conditions, they too expressed discomfort with the humidity.   Gym and conditioning sessions were equally tough. Opting for outdoor workouts and team runs on the beach, strength and conditioning coach Zane Webster adopted this approach to help us players adapt to the conditions. With even some of the fittest players rating the heat-inspired run a seven out of ten, it was clear that the heat was on, and no matter the time of day, you were bound to work up a sweat.   When approaching a match, strategy was key. India is a team that has become very successful over the years, with world-class players like Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana. As we trained, the players honed their strengths and planned how they would counterattack using our own skillset.   Despite the results, the team collectively took several positives from each game. We celebrated key milestones, including Tazmin Brits’ century, Nadine de Klerk’s 50th ODI wicket and Annerie Dercksen’s consistency with both bat and ball. We also celebrated Chloé Tryon’s hat-trick and fifer, Nondumiso’s career-best performance with the bat, the debuts and first ODI wickets of Seshnie and Miané, as well as Coach Mandla’s first full tour with the team.   When it comes to the Proteas Women, celebrating each other’s successes and milestones is what unites us as a team. The night before the opening match, a new tradition was introduced. One that added real meaning to what it means to don the Proteas badge.    "Rooted in Values. United by Purpose." This creed echoed through the hotel hallways as all players (having previously made their debuts), along with management, proudly read out the pledge reaffirming their commitment to our shared team values and our purpose as Proteas Women players.   Newbies Karabo Meso, Seshnie Naidu and Miané Smit, for whom the ceremony was introduced, had the honour of reading the pledge in front of their teammates ahead of their respective debut matches.    They also wrote their debut numbers on a lock, symbolically locking in their commitment to the team and the nation. The lock was then placed at the stadium where they made their debut, secured forever in the country where they took to the field for the first time as Proteas ODI players.   Battling humidity levels of up to 85% and temperatures in the mid-thirties, the team showed great resilience as they continued to fight, match after match. Some players described this tour as one of the hardest tours of their careers, physically.    Although these matches didn’t go our way, the team remains fixated on the main prize, to be awarded later this year. With the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 taking place in India,  this Tri-Series formed an important part of the squad’s preparation ahead of the prestigious tournament.    After finishing as runners-up in the 2023 T20 World Cup on home soil, as well as in the T20 World Cup last year, we will once again look to achieve the extraordinary by adopting another key theme introduced by Coach Mandla: "Dominate."   Proteas Women Squad – ODI Tri-Series Laura Wolvaardt (Captain) (Fidelity Titans), Tazmin Brits (DP World Lions), Nadine de Klerk (World Sports Betting Western Province), Annerie Dercksen (Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers), Lara Goodall (World Sports Betting Western Province), Sinalo Jafta (DP World Lions), Ayabonga Khaka (DP World Lions), Masabata Klaas (Fidelity Titans), Suné Luus (Fidelity Titans), Karabo Meso (DP World Lions), Nonkululeko Mlaba (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Seshnie Naidu (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Nondumiso Shangase (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Miané Smit (Knights) and Chloé Tryon (DP World Lions)

  • The ultimate guide to dry skin relief.

When temperatures dip, your skin often feels the impact first, becoming tight, dry, and sometimes even itchy or cracked. Cold weather, indoor heating, and lower humidity levels all contribute to moisture loss, making winter the season when your skin needs extra attention and support. We have the ultimate guide to dry skin relief. Image supplied Here’s a practical guide to keeping your skin comfortable, hydrated, and protected:   1. Hydrate first, humectants are your friend It’s not enough to simply moisturise, you need to attract hydration back into the skin. Products containing humectants like glycerine are ideal for this, as they draw moisture from the air into the outer layer of the skin. “Glycerine is especially useful in colder months,” says Xolani Sibanze, from Clere Glycerine, Gly-Co-Oil and Petroleum Jelly . “It helps keep skin soft and hydrated, and it pairs well with other moisturisers that lock in that moisture.” For best results, apply glycerine-based products like Clere Glycerine to damp skin straight after bathing or showering.   2. Seal in moisture, use an occlusive layer Once you’ve hydrated the skin, the next step is to stop that moisture from escaping. This is where occlusives, products that form a barrier on the skin, come in. They’re particularly effective in winter, helping to prevent trans epidermal water loss.   Petroleum jelly is a tried-and-tested occlusive, and applying a thin layer over your moisturiser can go a long way in keeping skin soft and protected. Clere’s Petroleum Jelly range is available in fragrance-free and fragrance variants, suitable for use in cold, dry conditions.   “Occlusives are essential in winter skincare. They don’t add moisture, they help retain it,” explains Sibanze. Image supplied 3. Target high-stress areas with dual-action products Areas such as elbows, knees, ankles, and hands tend to suffer most during winter. Using a product that combines hydrating and barrier-protecting ingredients helps restore these dry zones more effectively. Clere Gly-Co-Oil, which blends glycerine with tissue oil, is designed specifically for very dry or ashy skin. The Gly-Co-Oil with Marula variant adds nourishing marula oil, known for its soothing and antioxidant properties.   4. Simplify your routine, and be consistent Skincare doesn’t require a shelf full of products, but consistency is key. A few well-formulated products, applied daily, can make all the difference.   A balanced routine might include: A gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin. A hydrating layer (glycerine or a water-based lotion). A moisturiser or oil-based blend to nourish the skin. An occlusive layer like petroleum jelly to lock it all in. Make it a habit, particularly after showering, before bed, and before heading outdoors.   5. Hands and feet need love too Don’t forget the areas that are most exposed to the elements or endure the most friction. Hands can become rough or chapped from frequent washing, while feet often get dry from socks and closed shoes. Apply a hydrating oil or lotion, followed by petroleum jelly, before bed. For extra effectiveness, wear cotton gloves or socks to help the product absorb overnight. Image supplied Dry skin in cooler weather is common, but it doesn’t have to be inevitable. By understanding your skin’s needs, and adjusting your routine to include products that hydrate, nourish, and protect, you can keep dryness at bay.   “The key is working with your skin, not against it,” says Sibanze. “Hydration, nourishment, and protection, when you get those three steps right, you’ll notice a real difference in how your skin looks and feels.”   For more from Clere visit their website , Facebook and Instagram pages.

  • Giving freedom and independence to the visually impaired, the South African Guide-Dogs Association announces its second annual Give a Cane Campaign.

Last year, South Africa helped raise enough to buy 500 white canes. This year, let’s double the impact, one R50 donation at a time Image supplied Following the success of the SA Guide-Dogs Association's inaugural Give a Cane Campaign in 2024, which managed to provide 500 white canes to people living with visual impairments, the South African Guide-Dogs Association is proud to announce the launch of Give a Cane 2025, from 12 May until 31 July, with an even bigger goal in sight.   This year, the campaign is calling on South Africans to help raise enough to fund the distribution of at least 1,000 white canes and essential orientation and mobility training. With donations towards a cane starting at just R50, everyone can be part of someone’s journey to independence.   “A white cane is so much more than a mobility aid, it’s freedom, dignity, and the confidence to move through life independently,” says Pieter van Niekerk, spokesperson for the SA Guide-Dogs Association and a white cane user himself.   Image supplied Real lives. Real impact. Take Mtale Moodise, a gym enthusiast from Cosmo City, who confidently walks himself to and from the gym with the help of his cane. Or Ceala, who lost her vision suddenly during matric, and after a year of adjustment and support, passed and is now studying Psychology at the University of Pretoria. Then there’s Henrick, who lost his sight at age eight and today is a first-year Law student with dreams of working in cybersecurity. Each of these lives was changed by something as simple and as powerful as a white cane.   Why the white cane matters The white cane used by SA Guide-Dogs is not a regular walking stick. It’s a specialised mobility tool with a rounded ball tip designed to detect changes in terrain, from sidewalks to tactile paving, and signal to others that the user is visually impaired. This promotes safety, awareness, and inclusion in public spaces. Image supplied Get involved You don’t have to walk alone, and you don’t have to give big. A R50 donation helps bring someone closer to independence. With a theme that called for “Supahfine: Tailoring in Neat Style,” the evening delivered a bold, playful, and fashion-forward celebration of comedy and couture over the crisp elegance of Savanna Neat. It marked a bold celebration of Savanna Neat – a golden, toasted oak ode to those who know their cider and their style. The night delivered luxe, looks, and crisp, dry laughter — the Savanna Neat way. The night served comedic commentary on Met Gala moments, black carpet poses with proudly South African flair, and a crowd of influencers, comedians, fashionistas, and Friends of the Brand who turned up with looks as polished and crisp as the drink in hand — Savanna Neat. Commenting on the brand’s latest play for the culture, Kayla Hendricks, Marketing Communication Manager for Savanna, shared: “The Savanna Neat Gala presented an opportunity to create more than just a memorable night out — we wanted a cultural moment that says: South Africa does premium, fashion, culture in our own signature way. Savanna Neat is a premium crisp and dry cider, with notes of toasted oak and is stylishly laid-back. The Neat Gala was reflective of just that, celebrating the unique flavour that comes from blending the iconic innovative edge of Savanna Premium Cider and equally iconic cultural moves for a bold, elevated finish.” Image supplied Mzansi’s most fashion-savvy and esteemed media personalities lit up the black carpet in everything from runway upcycles to couture. From some of Mzansi’s faves in attendance rocking black carpet glam to fashion commentary that kept timelines buzzing, the night wasn’t just a moment — it was a movement. If the Met is fashion’s biggest night, the Savanna Neat Gala may have just become its most iconic remix. The guest list brought the buzz, with public figure Lasizwe, media personality Mohale Motaung, award-winning stylist and reality TV star Phupho Gumede, TikTok stars Banele Ndaba and Cassidy Nicholson, and author Tshiamo Modisane (who also took home the evening’s Best Dressed title) all turning heads. Also spotted were media personality Dominic Zaca, retired soccer player Bongani Khumalo, reality TV star and media personality Moshe Ndiki, Savanna Comics Choice Award winner Celeste Ntuli, seasoned comedian and media personality Mpho Popps, and comedian Nina Hastie — all bringing flair to the affair.
