  • Cerealously Cool: SA’s First All-Day Cereal Café Is a Nostalgic Dream Come True

Long Street, Cape Town’s vibrant party strip, has a new resident—one that’s bringing a spoonful of nostalgia to the heart of the city. Why So Cerious? , South Africa’s first all-day cereal café and bakery, is the brainchild of the Bodhania family: mother-and-sons trio Shaakira, Nabeel (22), and Yusuf (17). Image supplied Their mission? To serve joy, one bowl at a time. A Sweet Dream Takes Shape The inspiration for Why So Cerious? came from the family’s travels across Europe and the Middle East, where dedicated cereal cafés have long been a novelty. Recognizing a gap in the South African market, the Bodhanias decided to bring the experience home. Opening its doors in December 2024, the café quickly became a Long Street favourite, offering an unexpected late-night indulgence alongside bars and fast-food joints. With a menu built on nostalgia, it taps into a universal childhood memory—Saturday mornings spent in front of the TV, a colourful cereal box in hand, and not a care in the world. A Name with Meaning The café’s playful name is both a nod to pop culture and a deeply personal tribute. Inspired by Heath Ledger’s iconic Joker line in The Dark Knight , Why So Cerious? carries special significance for the family. It was a phrase often repeated by Shaakira’s late daughter, and when it came time to name the café, it felt like the perfect fit. To tie it back to the concept, the family swapped the "S" for a "C," blending their love for nostalgia with a touch of whimsy. A Nostalgic Menu with a Modern Twist At Why So Cerious? , childhood favourites meet creative new treats. The café offers a curated mix of local and imported cereals, from classics like Frosties and Fruit Loops to hard-to-find international gems like Oreo O’s and Cap’n Crunch. But the menu goes beyond just cereal bowls. House-baked croissants, éclairs, and cereal-infused cupcakes are made fresh in small batches throughout the day. One standout creation—the ice cream burger —has quickly become a customer favourite. Featuring a toasted brioche bun filled with ice cream and cereal, it delivers a contrast of textures and temperatures that keeps people coming back. Image supplied Balancing Generations, Building a Business The café is a true family affair. Shaakira brings her experience as co-founder of Bake It Yourself , a popular online baking business. Nabeel focuses on strategy and growth, while Yusuf balances his matric studies with shifts at the café, handling everything from prepping pastries to fine-tuning new menu items. The blend of perspectives—combining traditional know-how with modern trends—has been key to their success. The result? A café that feels both familiar and fresh, bridging generational tastes while offering a unique, nostalgic experience. Overcoming Challenges, Looking Ahead Running a cereal café in South Africa comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to sourcing imported cereals. Stock fluctuates due to shipping delays, meaning the menu is constantly evolving. Despite this, the café’s popularity has soared, and the family has already received multiple franchise enquiries. While their immediate focus is on strengthening the supply chain, expansion is firmly on the horizon. Plans for additional locations—starting with more Cape Town outlets and eventually reaching Johannesburg—are already taking shape. Image supplied More Than Just a Café At its core, Why So Cerious? isn’t just about cereal—it’s about creating moments of joy. From the nostalgic flavours to the playful atmosphere, the café offers a space where people can relive childhood memories or simply indulge in something fun and unexpected. Whether it’s a late-night sugar fix, a throwback to simpler times, or curiosity about the famous ice cream burger, Why So Cerious? makes every visit feel like Saturday morning all over again. Visit Why So Cerious: 263 Long Street, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town, 8001 Hours: Monday – Sunday, 8 AM – 11 PM

  • Style meets substance: PURA beverages step deeper into Jozi Street Culture.

In a city   where creative curiosity envelopes the sidewalk as boldly as it moves the runway, Jozi’s ever-evolving street culture forms the very essence of life to those in and around its surrounds. It’s no secret that where Mzansi lies, the celebration of style expression follows.   SAFW X Felipe Mazibuko & Toyko Black Enter PURA Beverage, a locally grown, internationally celebrated business. The better-for-you soda, operating not just as a brand but as a culture, celebrates the need for self-expression. Live a little  better  in whatever way that lands through your lens of individuality.   In ode to this value, intrinsic PURA took the opportunity to celebrate local style this past weekend at SA Fashion week, where they weren’t just served – they were seen. From front-row designer hands, refreshing the backstage pulse of models and creatives, to hitting the streets with Shelf Life Run Crew led by style icon Tokyo Black, PURA did double its duty as both an essential refreshment and a bespoke fashion accessory. PURA X SAFW X Toyko Black "For us, fashion isn't what you wear — it's how you move, how you fuel, how you present, and street culture is all about expressing who you are, unapologetically. There’s no place that does it louder or prouder than Jozi. From the sidewalks to the galleries, it’s all about making a statement. PURA hits the same. Clean, bold, and true to self. Whether it’s through what you wear or how you move, we’re both about living a little better, your way. PURA's got that real flavour. It slides into your look like it's been there forever. No sugar rush, no gimmicks. Just pure refreshment for better lives."   -               Tokyo Black, Street Culture Curator and Fashion Insider   PURA X SAFW X Toyko Black As the city pulsed with fashion drops, street link-ups and cultural mashups, PURA flowed seamlessly through it all, reflecting Jozi’s individuality, grit, and global taste. Why it Hit Differently   1.           Natural Ingredients, Nothing to Hide With no artificial additives and no sugar overload, PURA was the refreshing reset Jozi’s fashion week needed — a clean, conscious choice that kept creators, stylists, and runners refreshed and ‘high-vibed’ all weekend long.   2.           Understated Sparkle, Not Overly Sweet With its subtle fizz and heightened flavours such as Seville Orange and Pomegranate, PURA is not pretending to be something it's not — it's the type of sip that brings exactly the right amount of buoyancy between shoots, on-the-go creative, or while plotting your next look.   3.           Low Sugar, High Style In a world where everything — from sneakers to skincare — takes centre stage, refreshment that feeds both your body and your aesthetic is not up for debate. PURA delivers the glow without the crash. Skin on point. Energy intact.   4.           Slim Design, Fashion-Friendly Don't pretend aesthetics don't matter. With its sleek, minimalist can design, PURA is just as at home in the style squad. Whether sitting next to a Balenciaga bag or as part of a flat-lay with a streetwear haul, a refreshment that looks just as good as it quenches? Say no more.   5.           Locally Made, Internationally Trending Rooted in South Africa and attuned to global wellness culture, PURA is the best of both worlds: proudly local, naturally international. It's the perfect pairing for a fashion week that celebrated both heritage and innovation. This wasn't a campaign. This was a cultural cue. PURA didn't sponsor Fashion Week — they chose to live it, breathe it, and refresh it. The brand was there in the rhythm of the runways, the after-hours collaborations, and the morning-after briefings.

  • Auto & General's campaign leverages IPCC climate predictions and AI imagery to visualise regional climate change impacts across South Africa in the year 2100.

Auto & General's campaign leverages IPCC climate predictions and AI imagery to visualise regional climate change impacts across South Africa in the year 2100. Image supplied Auto & General has used AI image generation tool, Midjourney, to visualise the potential impact of climate change on iconic landmarks and cityscapes nationwide, highlighting specific threats like heatwaves in Gauteng, droughts in the Free State, and flooding in KZN The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has projected that extreme daily precipitation events will intensify by about 7% for each 1°C of global warming Auto & General’s experts share practical tips for homeowners to fortify their properties As South Africa contends with a period of significant rainfall and flooding, Auto & General has launched a crucial campaign to illuminate the growing threat of climate change across the country's diverse provinces.  Drawing upon predictive data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and utilising striking AI-generated visuals, the initiative aims to highlight the specific vulnerabilities of each region, from inland provinces facing heatwaves and water scarcity to coastal areas threatened by rising sea levels and severe storms. While these futuristic visuals may appear like scenes from a science fiction movie, the threat is very real. Recent disasters like the raging wildfires in Los Angeles and the catastrophic KwaZulu-Natal floods of 2022 serve as stark reminders that climate change is already reshaping our world - and South Africa is no exception. Image supplied The recent heavy rainfall and flooding across much of South Africa serve as a timely reminder of the escalating frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, a trend linked to climate change. Scientific consensus, supported by the IPCC, indicates a clear trend towards more frequent and intense extreme weather, while studies, such as those by the World Weather Attribution group, have already linked human-induced climate change to a doubling in the likelihood of extreme rainfall events like the devastating 2022 KwaZulu-Natal floods. Offering a tangible glimpse into Mzansi’s potential future, Auto & General has used cutting-edge AI image generation tool, Midjourney, to visualise predicted climate change damage to iconic natural landmarks and urban environments, relevant to their geographical location for the year 2100. The imagery encompasses: Western Cape’s Table Mountain and Cape Point: Scenarios illustrating prolonged droughts and rising temperatures Eastern Cape’s Hole in the Wall, Tsitsikamma National Park and Gqeberha: Coastal erosion and drought affecting water-scarce regions and agricultural lands Northern Cape’s Augrabies Falls and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Desertification and the impact of reduced water flow Free State’s Golden Gate Highlands National Park: Drought-stricken agricultural landscapes and dwindling water resources KwaZulu-Natal’s Drakensberg Mountains, iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Durban and its Golden Mile: Severe flooding due to heavy rainfall, coastal erosion from rising sea levels and tropical cyclones Gauteng’s Magaliesberg Mountains and Johannesburg: Potential impacts of intensifying urban heat island effects and increased risk of flash flooding Mpumalanga and Limpopo’s Kruger National Park: Rising temperatures cause heatwaves and droughts threatening water security and agriculture North West’s Pilanesberg National Park and Madikwe Game Reserve: Arid conditions affecting mining operations and natural reserves Image supplied These powerful visuals aim to raise awareness and underscore the urgent need for preparedness. Obakeng Moloisane, Executive Head: Distribution at Auto & General explains: "The impacts of climate change are not uniform across South Africa. While inland provinces like Gauteng, Free State, and North West grapple with intensifying heatwaves, water scarcity, and flash floods; coastal regions face threats from rising sea levels and more severe storms.  "These gradual shifts in our climate, if ignored, can trigger a cascade of irreversible damage to our environment, infrastructure, and livelihoods. It is crucial for homeowners to understand these risks and take proactive steps." Moloisane offers the following advice for homeowners: Understand Your Regional Risks:  Identify the primary climate change threats specific to your province, such as heatwaves and water scarcity in Gauteng, droughts in the Free State, or flooding in KwaZulu-Natal. Consider factors like proximity to flood plains, susceptibility to hail, and potential for water scarcity. Implement Location-Specific Protections: Adapt your home protection measures to regional climate risks by improving drainage in flood-prone areas, reinforcing roofs against hail, and implementing water-wise landscaping. In drought-affected regions, consider installing rainwater harvesting systems to enhance resilience. Review Insurance Coverage Based on Regional Threats: Ensure your home insurance adequately covers climate-related risks specific to your region, such as flooding, storm damage, or drought. Understand your policy’s terms and discuss potential gaps with your insurer to stay protected. Consult Your Insurer: Engage with Auto & General's experts to review your coverage and ensure it provides the necessary protection against the increasing and varied climate change impacts in your region. Proactive consultation is key to ensuring claims certainty, no matter where you reside. "Auto & General recognizes that climate change presents distinct challenges for different regions of South Africa," continues Moloisane. “Our campaign is designed to empower homeowners with the knowledge to take proactive steps to protect their properties and secure the right insurance coverage. We are committed to supporting our customers across all provinces, ensuring they are insured for their unique climate risks. In these increasingly challenging times, we strive to provide peace of mind and claims certainty, urging South Africans to engage with our resources and speak to our advisors for the right protection.” For more information, please visit: https://www.autogen.co.za/blog/the-climate-crisis-how-having-home-insurance-can-help/

  • PROTEAS WOMEN HEAD COACH UNITING EXPERIENCE AND YOUTH FOR TRI-SERIES SUCCESS.

As the Proteas Women gear up for the One-Day International (ODI) Tri-Series in Sri Lanka later this month, head coach Mandla Mashimbyi has shared insights into the heart of his coaching philosophy, a deliberate and deeply human approach aimed at creating a balanced, resilient, and connected team environment. Image supplied Speaking ahead of the tour, Mashymbi detailed his vision of fostering a culture where youthful talent complements seasoned experience, and where developing the person is just as important as developing the cricketer.   “Skill is skill, but when coupled with a good human being, you'll get a lot more out of that player. My coaching philosophy is rooted in growing the human. If that part is nurtured, then the cricketer thrives,” said Mashymbi.   Throughout the weeklong training camp, which took place in Tshwane last week, connecting mindset and execution became a key objective. What you think versus how you do it was a key theme which echoed throughout all team discussions.   In his short time with the team, Mashymbi has already started building a cultural shift. One of the key initiatives was introducing personal autobiographies, an exercise designed to help players understand one another beyond cricket.   “In teams, we often fall into the trap of thinking we know each other, but knowing someone’s name and role is not knowing their journey. When players understand what others have overcome to get here, they’ll fight harder for one another,” he explained.    This team-first ethos extends to the way he balances the squad. With experienced leaders like Chloé Tyron playing in her 14th year in the national setup alongside youthful talents like 17-year-old Karabo Meso, Mashymbi sees opportunity, not risk.   “I'm a coach who is youth-mad because of what they bring. They come with no baggage, they come with an open mind to want to have an impact on the environment, which is good,” he noted.    “Youngsters bring energy and fearlessness. They want to learn, they want to contribute. Experience, on the other hand, brings calm, structure, and a deep understanding of the game. It’s about marrying the two, and when they work hand in hand, we get the best of both worlds.”   Mashymbi has empowered all senior players to take on mentorship roles, while ensuring the environment is open enough for younger players to voice their ideas and assert their presence.   “Everyone in the team must feel they belong. Once players know their relevance in the space, whether it’s mentoring, energy, or performance, then the team really begins to grow.”   For Mashymbi, true success lies in the moment players instinctively uphold team values, not because they’ve been told to, but because that’s simply who they are. Mashymbi has shown faith in young players like Karabo Meso, Seshnie Naidu, and Miané Smit, not just as short-term selections but as long-term investments.   “Karabo has been really good this last year with the bat, and Seshnie brings a different dynamic into the team as a leggy. Miané is somebody who is also promising with the bat. They’ve earned this opportunity with their performances and potential.”   “It’s better to expose them now in a safe environment where they can learn through both failure and success. In a few years, they’ll be major contributors to South African cricket,” he added.   As for the immediate goal ahead of the Sri Lanka ODI Tri-Series, Mashimbyi said, “Right now, it’s all about laying the foundation. When the time is right, we’ll sell the dream. But first, we build, and we build together.” Proteas Women Squad – ODI Tri-Series Laura Wolvaardt (Captain) (Fidelity Titans), Tazmin Brits (DP World Lions), Nadine de Klerk (World Sports Betting Western Province), Annerie Dercksen (Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers), Lara Goodall (World Sports Betting Western Province), Sinalo Jafta (DP World Lions), Ayabonga Khaka (DP World Lions), Masabata Klaas (Fidelity Titans), Suné Luus (Fidelity Titans)  Karabo Meso (DP World Lions), Nonkululeko Mlaba (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Seshnie Naidu (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Nondumiso Shangase (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), *Miané Smit (Knights) and Chloé Tryon (DP World Lions) *Uncapped   Fixtures – ODI Tri-Series   Sunday, 27 April @ 06h30 SAST – 1st ODI – Sri Lanka vs India (R. • From sun-kissed to winter-ready, here is the skincare transition you can’t ignore

As the seasons shift from summer’s warmth to autumn’s crisp embrace, your skin’s needs change too. The drop in temperature, drier air, and increased indoor heating can strip your skin of moisture, leaving it feeling tight, dull, and irritated. A strategic seasonal skincare switch-up is essential to keep your complexion healthy, hydrated, and resilient against the harsher elements. Image supplied Here’s how to adapt your skincare routine for the colder months ahead: 1. Focus on deep hydration – Colder weather demands extra moisture to combat dryness and maintain your skin’s suppleness. Make hydration a priority by ensuring your skin gets the nourishment it needs daily. Drinking enough water and applying a protective layer to seal in moisture can help prevent dryness and irritation. 2. Introduce an essential layer: Clere Petroleum Jelly – One of the most effective ways to protect your skin from harsh environmental conditions is by adding a moisture-sealing layer. Clere Petroleum Jelly is a must-have during this transition, locking in hydration while soothing dry and chapped skin. “Colder temperatures demand more from your skincare routine. Clere Petroleum Jelly creates a protective shield, keeping your skin soft, nourished, and resilient throughout autumn and winter,” says Xolani Sibanze from Clere Petroleum Jelly. Apply it to lips, elbows, heels, and any dry patches for instant relief and lasting hydration. 3. Be gentle with your skin – As the temperatures drop, your skin may become more sensitive. Avoid excessive rubbing or harsh treatments that can strip away natural oils. Instead, focus on nourishing and soothing your skin by keeping it well-moisturised and protected. 4. Lock in moisture – Moisture retention is key during autumn and winter. After bathing or washing your face, apply Clere Petroleum Jelly while your skin is still damp. This helps seal in hydration, ensuring your skin remains soft and smooth throughout the day. Image supplied 5. Protect your hands and lips – Your hands and lips are particularly vulnerable to seasonal dryness. Keep a tub of Clere Petroleum Jelly with you to provide on-the-go nourishment. Applying it before bed ensures overnight repair, so you wake up with soft, healthy skin. 6. Create a consistent routine – Seasonal changes can make your skin more unpredictable. Establishing a consistent, nourishing skincare routine ensures your skin remains balanced and resilient. By incorporating Clere Petroleum Jelly into your daily regimen, you provide your skin with the care it needs to thrive in colder weather. Tip 1: Plan your route but stay flexible “ Exploring South Africa by car allows you to stop wherever the road takes you. Flexibility is key, whether it's a scenic coastal drive or a detour through mountain passes. Remember to keep your GPS handy, and plan fuel stops for longer trips.” Tip 2: Brush up on the traffic laws and road signs“ Did you know driving with your hazard lights on is illegal unless you're stationary? On national roads, the numbers on small pillars can be used as landmarks in case you ever need assistance and are unsure of where you are. Brush up on the local driving laws for your safety. This ensures a more enjoyable and worry-free road trip.” Tip 3: Road safety first “ While the open road invites adventure, responsible driving is essential. Always wear your seatbelt, don’t use your phone while driving, and stick to the recommended speed limits. Keeping a safe following distance and being mindful of road conditions will keep you safe and let you enjoy the freedom of the journey.” Tip 4: Take time to savour the experience “ South Africa’s landscapes are diverse and beautiful, from winding coastal roads to dramatic mountain passes. Enjoy the moment, slow down, and take in the scenery, or pull over at a designated lookout point and enjoy the view. You will make lifelong memories.” Tip 5: Be prepared for the unexpected “ Whether it’s wildlife crossing the road or a sudden weather change, driving in South Africa requires alertness. Always be ready to stop for animals, even if it means pulling over completely. Keeping your vehicle in good condition ensures a smooth and safe adventure wherever you go. So, make sure your vehicle is well-maintained and serviced regularly. “ Finally, Brina adds: “Whether you're chasing adventure, relaxation, or a slice of history, South Africa’s small towns and scenic road trips offer something for every Good South African this Easter holiday. So, gear up and rediscover the beauty in your own backyard… no passport required!” For more information on South Africa’s best road trips and staycations, please visit:   https://www.budgetinsurance.co.za/news/small-town-charm/

  • The Levi’s® Brand and Denim Tears Celebrate New Orleans Heritage in Fourth Collaborative Collection.

Building on the success of their previous collaborations, the Levi's® brand and Denim Tears return with their fourth collection, which pays homage to the rich cultural tapestry of New Orleans and the Black Masking Indian tradition. The latest collection from Levi’s® and Denim Tears honors the artistry, resilience, and community spirit of the Young Seminole Hunters and the revered Big Chief Demond Melancon through thoughtfully designed pieces that blend heritage and contemporary streetwear. Image supplied The fourth Levi's® x Denim Tears collection delivers eight new pieces. The Photo Trucker and Photo Jeans feature photo-printed garments capturing the Young Seminole Hunters in their ceremonial regalia, immortalizing the vibrant craftsmanship and cultural significance of this tradition. Each photo-printed piece undergoes an intentional imperfection process during printing, ensuring that no two items are exactly alike – much like the handcrafted nature of Mardi Gras Indian costumes themselves. The Photo Trucker jacket features a relaxed, slightly cropped silhouette based on the iconic Type III design while the accompanying Photo Jeans get their fit profile from the 568™ Stay Loose jeans.  Image supplied Drawing further inspiration from New Orleans heritage, the Track Jacket and Track Pants feature mid-indigo wash with dark wash color-blocking, adorned with cotton fleur de lis prints – a symbol deeply connected to the city’s French roots. Gold rope-like piping evokes the ornate detailing of marching band uniforms, another significant element of New Orleans cultural expression. Image supplied The Crewneck Sweatshirt continues the collection’s thematic exploration with a washed black base featuring the same cotton fleur de lis artwork. Meanwhile, the Baseball Tee combines floral gingham print with dark green 3-quarter sleeves, evoking Southern tablecloth patterns that symbolize family gatherings and communal celebration. Image supplied Completing the collection are accessories that honor cultural practices: a mid-indigo Durag with all-over cotton flower print and a photo-printed hat featuring the same intentional imperfection technique used throughout the collection. Image supplied “New Orleans represents a unique intersection of African, Indigenous, and French cultural influences that have shaped American identity in profound ways,” said Tremaine Emory, founder of Denim Tears. “This collection honors the sacred traditions of the Mardi Gras Indians while recognizing their continued relevance in contemporary culture. The intentional imperfections in our printing process reflect the human touch behind these traditions – something that can't be mass-produced or replicated.” Image supplied The fourth Levi's® x Denim Tears collection was photographed in New Orleans with members of the Young Seminole Hunters, capturing the authentic connection between these garments and the community they celebrate. The collection launches worldwide on April 4th and will be available for purchase on Levi.co.za ,  on Denimtears.com , and in-store at Sandton City and V&A Waterfront. The collection will also be available at select premium wholesale doors on April 5th.
